My Goals in ENGLCOM [edited: final]

To read, one must be able to write.

Writing is perhaps one of the most important elements in communication. Since our early years of learning, we have used writing as a mean for expressing our thoughts, sharing our experiences and simply jotting down important ideas that we can use in the future. There is a great power in the written word and that certain “power” is found in writers whose words, skills and passion have the ability to move their readers in a way that could promote change. In this writing class, my main goal is to become an effective and versatile writer.

To be an effective and versatile writer, one must be able to motivate his/her audience to act by expressing his/her thoughts clearly through writing. If I were to inspire and encourage my audience to act, I must be able to write well. To do that, I must expose my readers to new ideas with the right words that can open their minds to the message I want them to see. In accordance with that, I want to widen my vocabulary in my Englcom writing class.

Like any other goal, it is not enough to just aspire—there must also be action. To fulfill my objectives for this class, one of the things I have to do is to read more. Through reading, I can expose myself to different writing styles and techniques and expand my vocabulary as well. I can express clear thoughts by writing cohesively, giving clear ideas, stressing my main points, presenting coherent messages and by following the right formats and conventions of writing. To inspire my audience, I can use my personal experiences as well as others’ and relate them to my essays.

My goal in this writing class is not totally impossible—it is reachable. To achieve them, I must always keep them in mind whenever I am writing and give effort on making research about my topics. I recommend my readers to be open minded when they read and to my fellow writers, always think of the audience and how your works may affect them, their lives and their perspectives.

Poverty Today: ENGLCOM-W Diagnostic Test Essay

Title: Poverty Today
Main Idea: What to do to rise against poverty. What is it?

It is quite common among the cities, that particular state that brings every person to their demise when they finally sink down to it. Centuries ago, the Filipinos fought against the oppression, abuse, and racial discrimination of Spain for their freedom from it – poverty. Every citizen of a country has his or her right to utilize its resources. But with the fast-paced economic growth of other countries, the Philippines strives hard to catch up; and thus, leaving many of its children behind in poverty.
Poverty is a state wherein a large number of people struggle to sustain their daily needs with barely enough money or resources. It is a state or condition seen in almost all countries, especially those in East Asia. Families starve, children are left to fend for themselves in the streets and criminal acts are done by people who are stuck in poverty as it is, for them, their last option. And although the government fight hard to stop this growing problem an do try hard to help, people still wonder why with all the support, programs and help being given to them are they still suffering this ill fate. Many shout the word corruption – that their leaders hoard all the government funds to themselves. Maybe they’re right, considering the latest impeachment trial of Philippines’ very own Chief Justice Corona for his four dollar accounts. But they themselves also appointed these leaders during the elections, so why blame them if you chose them yourself?
What I would like to point out is that they – we should stop blaming others for our misfortune. If we are knocked down to poverty by these people, then we should stand in our own two feet and rise. From our history as Filipinos, we not only achieved freedom from wars or revolts or even words. We gained our freedom through strengthening our hearts and doing our best to rise. And this is what I urge my fellow Filipinos of today to do. Lower your prides and strengthen your hearts.
